Saliva Hormone Testing
Saliva testing is the most reliable way to measure free, "bioavailable" hormone activity. Unlike blood, saliva testing measures only the fraction of hormones that escape the bloodstream and are active in the tissues of the breast, uterus, brain, and skin. Saliva collection is easy and can be done any place at your convenience. Saliva testing provides objective information to your physician about hormone imbalances that you may be experiencing and uses this information along with your subjective complaints to decide which bio-identical hormone replacement therapy is best for you.
Free or "bioavailable" hormones are the active forms of the hormones (non-protein bound hormones). Bioavailable hormones provide the benefits at the cellular level. Saliva testing is a reliable way to measure your "free" hormones. Most blood tests do not measure bioavailable hormone levels. Also, saliva hormones more accurately reflect tissue uptake and response of hormones delivered through the skin in creams, gels, or patches (Blood and urine tests significantly underestimate hormones delivered topically).
