Arterial Elasticity Index
The Arterial Elasticity Index (AEI) is a blood pressure test that generates information about the elasticity or flexibility of the brachial (arm) artery. The AEI is a number that correlates with arteriosclerosis. Because arteriosclerosis reduces the flexibility in arteries, the higher the AEI, the more likely someone is to having hardening of the arteries, the lower the number, the less likely.
Hardening of the arteries force your heart to work harder to supply the body with blood. This extra strain on the heart is a primary cause of cardiovascular disease. Catching this process early allows you to make important lifestyle changes such as diet, exercise, smoking cessation, and initiation of appropriate drug therapy to slow the process. In addition, it is a good tool to identify those who suffer from this "silent killer." Including those that do not have any obvious risk factors.
At Main at Locust Pharmacy Clinic and Medical Supplies, we offer arterial elasticity index testing using the CardioVision® ultrasound device.
